The Color Purple(2023)Movie Review

It’s a solid new adaptation of The Color Purple with stunning production designs, strong direction, and excellent performances from the cast members. While it may not be a short film, similar to this year’s only other movie that reaches its level, Oppenheimer, I was engaged throughout without a moment of boredom. Director Blitz Bazawule does an impressive job of handling the tone and setting, complemented by vibrant and beautiful production sets, costumes, and camerawork. The musical singing moments, although not all the tracks were outstanding, were well-executed, featuring some great lyrics and musical exploration. The performances were mostly impressive, with no weak links. Danielle Brooks truly stole the show as Sofia in the film, shining brightly like a star. Her talent and beauty are simply awe-inspiring.

This movie requires you to put aside your preconceptions about the original and watch it with a fresh perspective as a standalone, unique retelling of the story. The plot centers around two young women raised by a shop owner after their mother’s death. One sister is sold off for marriage and finds herself in an abusive household, where she loses her sense of self-worth. She clings to acts of kindness and memories of her sister as a glimmer of hope for a better future.

Here is an exceptional film that truly succeeds in achieving its goals. The messages and themes are delivered flawlessly, and the remarkable outcome will not disappoint anyone.
